The most popular outfit for women in Jammu and Kashmir is the pheran. It is a long, loose upper garment. Such dresses have colorful floral elements and styles. Pheran is knee-length and stitched at the front side and on the finishes. Its sleeves tend to be wide, made of either wool or jamawar, which is a mixture of wool and cotton with no side slits. The embroideries or floral designs are made of cotton threads. Such embroidery is known as “فیرن” in the Kashmiri language. Men’s pheran dresses are simple and have no colorful designs. Ankle length, the pheran is tied at the waist.
